Intro

Well, here we go. At the prompting of an old friend, and with encouragement from a few different people, I have mustered the courage to start a blog. I haven't written anything on a consistent basis since the privacy of my journal was compromised in 2005; here we are in 2010 and I am vowing my commitment to this endeavor.

I find it odd that I was required to select a name for my blog before ever having written in it, but I think the name I chose suits the direction toward which my thoughts tend to lead: Philosophy--of humanity, the psyche, culture, language, and our place in the universe.

The number 205265 is symbolic: it is the number of arc seconds in a radian, or the number of Astronomical Units in a Parsec. I first encountered this number in the Fall of 2009 when I took two Astronomy courses: a Stars & Galaxies Honors lecture with Dr. Perry Hacking (legendary professor) along with a concurrent laboratory. In the lab class, we were drift-timing to find the actual size of the features of the Moon we had observed. We were instructed to use a conversion formula, but to disregard the number 206265 because its significance was too "complicated" for our lesson to address. I stayed after hours to learn how this number fit into our calculations, and what it meant to an inquiring astronomer. After becoming the only person in my class to understand 206265, I knew I wasn't any more disadvantaged at math than any of the people who had taken Physics; it was simply that at that point I had possessed the drive to understand it.

Power doesn't come from talent or ability--it comes from passion. We achieve great things when we have the bravery to strive for them. And so, I present to you my friends, my blog.
